COVID-19 no barrier for fundraiser

At the height of the 2019-20 bushfires disaster that played out across Australia, a group of members at the Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club decided to make a difference and show support for the families of three firefighters killed while on duty protecting their communities.

Gary McSwain, Peter Jenkins, Grant Girdler and Colin Roberts enrolled local businesses to provide support for fundraising events to take place in March. The fundraiser did not incur any costs as local businesses offered their support completely free.

The group wanted to raise money by organising a golf competition at Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club and a gala night with auctions at Wills Domain Winery. The golf competition included some amazing prizes including a car and cash prizes. The gala night would bring together some of the region’s top chefs and locally produced wines and beers, with local talent providing the entertainment.

The target was to raise $100,000 to be divided equally for the three families. Unfortunately the COVID-19 outbreak meant that the events couldn’t proceed.

Not wanting to give up completely, the group requested those who had paid towards the fundraiser to consider leaving their payment as a donation. By the time all requested refunds were issued at the end of April, the group still had a total of $28,153.44. This will be paid to the families in the first week of May.
